Industry giant Carnival today announced plans to put passengers on stage in front of other passengers in karaoke concerts backed up by live bands. Superstar Live Karaoke, as the line is calling the new offering, will involve passengers belting out favorite tunes accompanied by Carnival guitarists, keyboarders and drummers, as well as backup singers.

Until now, karaoke on Carnival ships, as at most other lines, only has been offered in lounges outfitted with traditional pre-recorded, sing-a-long music track system. Carnival still will offer such traditional karaoke on its ships.Carnival says would-be performers can sign up for Superstar Live Karaoke with an on-site host in the designated lounge on each Carnival ship. Participation will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Carnival says passengers will be able to choose from a list of more than 100 songs to sing "We're giving people the ability to live out their dream and just go out and have fun."

It'll be on all 12 Carnival ships that operate itineraries of seven days or longer by year's end, the line says. Carnival is following in the footsteps of Princess Cruises, which also recently added karaoke backed up by a live band.
